The popular bean is a white bean that has characteristic and clearly differentiated features. Enjoy a great gastronomic appreciation.
Rooted in the Vallès and Maresme, the Mongeta del Ganxet is a native variety of medium size and white color, characteristic for its rounded and flat shape, and with a hook-shaped end. On 23 April 2007, the Government of Catalonia granted it the Protected Designation of Origin, and in 2012 the European Union protected its geographical location. Ganxet beans are produced in municipalities of Vallès Occidental, Vallès Oriental, Maresme and La Selva.
The marketing of ganxet beans is in the hands of producers' cooperatives, which distribute it throughout Catalonia, although the main points of sale are concentrated in the Vallès. The forms of consumption are those of white beans, that is, especially with sausage, but also in different stews and salads. In recent years, the valuation achieved by this bean has led to its consumption shifting from being concentrated in rural to urban areas.
Protected with PDO, crochet beans have a soft, persistent taste with a high creaminess. Its texture is fine and mellow, helped by the fineness of the peel. On the palate it leaves a floury sensation and a consistent taste that make it ideal for stews and cold salads.
