Traditionally grown for domestic consumption in the Osona village of Oristà, this chickpea variety is visually characterized by its small size. It is a very tasty and quick-cooking chickpea, smaller than the usual chickpea and with very thin skin, which is sold in small quantities.
Characterized by its small size and for providing a very tasty flavor and being quick cooking, this chickpea variety owes its name to the Osona town of Oristà, where it has traditionally been grown. With very thin leather, it is marketed in small quantities, which allows it to keep its high quality intact. The Oristà chickpea is produced in dry land cultivation, which means that the yields are not very significant, but guarantees a higher quality of the product. Once harvested, the chickpeas are allowed to rest for a few days and then beaten to, later, keep them in chambers where they are kept dry and ventilated, away from moisture. Cooking the Oristan chickpea is quick and they are attributed a superior taste with more nuances than other commercial varieties.
It is sold almost exclusively in food stores in Oristà and in a neighboring town.
Chickpea provides a high energy value due to the high presence of carbohydrates in the form of starch, and if combined with cereals or vegetables it stands as an important source of vegetable protein. It is also rich in minerals, providing significant doses of calcium, iron, magnesium and phosphorus, as well as vitamins of group B.
