Coca de Montblanc reached a certain name a few years ago, when it was marketed among the passengers of the trains that stopped at the station of this town.
Coca de Montblanc is a type of pickled coca that has been made in the town of Montblanc for more than fifty years. It reached popularity because a lady bought it in the bakery of the city and reselled it to passengers of trains that stopped at the station in the capital of the Conca de Barberà. Today, Montblanc bakeries continue to make it as one of the traditional products.
This cake is basically sold in Montblanc through direct sales to the winemaking ovens. Some also sell it abroad and serve it in some towns in Lleida, such as Mollerussa. It is usually intended for consumption for breakfast or snack. It is a cake highly appreciated by the people of the village, but little known by visitors. Thanks to its resemblance to the Coca de Sant Joan, this festivity is one of the highest dates of consumption.
Coca de Montblanc is a bread cake covered with sugar, with a soft and fluffy texture and sizes that vary depending on the winemakers. The smell is very marked by the presence of aromatic essences. The raw materials used are: flour, sugar, eggs, yeast, salt, butter and aromatic essences (anise, orange blossom water, matafaluga, etc.). For processing, the ingredients are mixed and kneaded manually; the resulting paste is cut into portions that stretch to give them an elongated shape; then, they are baked. They are made daily, but once purchased they can be kept for a few days protected from moisture; they can also be frozen. In recent years, new versions have been made covered with chocolate or cream.
