The cherry has become an alternative to the traditional crops of Alt Camp, which is why in recent years cherry trees have spread in this population.
In Bràfim, cherry cultivation had traditionally been marginal in an agricultural landscape dominated by vines, and cultivated cherry trees were traditional varieties that were located on the paths and margins. At the end of the 1960s, the commercial cultivation of the cherry began, which expanded during the following decades. In recent years, the production of cherries in Bràfim has been consolidated in the farms of about twenty farmers and has become a well-known and valued product.
The Bràfim cherry is sold through Tarragona wholesalers in boxes classified by sizes and qualities, with data from producers or packers. In some cases, it incorporates the "Cherries of Bràfim" callsign. Although it can be found in several markets and establishments in the area, a large part of it is incorporated into outdoor marketing circuits. It is consumed alone, both for dessert and between meals.
The Bràfim cherry is the fruit obtained from the cherry varieties grown in this population, the most important of which is mocking. It has a round shape and a maroon color on the outside and reddish on the inside. The size is variable, but tends to be quite large, around 14 mm in diameter. Its texture is fleshy and the taste is very sweet, without acidity. It is grown predominantly in dry land, selecting soils with good drainage and exposures with good lighting and aeration. At some points, the harvest begins at the end of April, but the period of greatest intensity is between the second half of May and the end of June. The fruits for fresh consumption are harvested by hand, with great care in order to preserve their attractiveness, and it is observed that they ripen as long as possible on the tree.
