Blue fish from Tarragona

Fishing has been one of the main economic activities of the Tarragona coast for centuries. The scope of catching oily fish is located in the Golf de Sant Jordi, from Coll de Balaguer to Cap de Tortosa.

Oily fish in general has bluish scales and a higher proportion of fat in meat than in the case of the so-called white fish, it is more sedentary and swims near the surface of the water. The species recognized as blue fish of Tarragona are: sardines, anchovies, horse mackerel, horse mackerel, bis and boga. This fish is exclusively extra class. To catch it, artisan fishing methods are used, with boats employing the art of hooping and going out at night. The size of oily fish species in Catalonia is regulated and controlled in order to avoid the fishing of immature specimens, which could threaten the health of the sea. Blue fish can be consumed in many ways, either fresh, stewed or grilled, or canned, with oil or salted.
