Artesa de Segre melon

It is a variety of melon adapted to dry vegetable crops in the regions of La Plana de Lleida and its cultivation, despite having suffered a recession in the 1990s, has been energized through some local initiatives.

The melon grown in the dry lands of the Artesa de Segre region is of the toad skin type, which benefits from the characteristics of this area: on the one hand, the deep, fertile and dry soils deliver just the right water so that the fruit has the right size, and, on the other hand, the powerful sun and the temperature contrasts between day and night, typical of the microclimate of the area, they give artesa melon its high sugar content and enviable quality. This is a rough-skinned melon, dark green and strong in color, which allows for long preservation. The meat is compact, sweet and white. Sowing takes place during the second half of April, when temperatures begin to rise enough for the plant to be born and grow properly and the harvest takes place between the months of July and August.

Attributes and nutritional properties

Fruit rich in water and low in sugars; therefore, its contribution in calories is scarce. It is an ideal moisturizer, which can be consumed in the desired amount without fear of ingesting an excess of calories or sugars and, therefore, it is especially indicated in weight control diets. In the orange pulp we find beta-carotene, which is transformed within our body into vitamin A, essential for vision and good condition of the skin, hair and mucous membranes. The antioxidant action is provided by vitamin C and the most prominent minerals are potassium and magnesium. The abundance of potassium and water makes it a quintessential diuretic food, which is beneficial for those suffering from hypertension or fluid retention. However, those suffering from kidney failure should restrict their consumption of melon, and their diet requires control of potassium.
