Cultivated entirely in dryland, clayey and very calcareous soils, in the Alt Penedès, the dry peach of Ordal has qualities and characteristics difficult to find in other peaches.
The Ordal peach does not refer to a variety, but corresponds to an area of origin. Different varieties are grown. Its characteristics obey three parameters: 1) The type of calcareous soil with slopes. 2) The thermal differential between day and night, very important both for coloration and aromas. 3) It is a dryland product and gives a very low production, so it must be practiced a lot of thinning. The towns that produce the largest numbers are Subirats and Avinyonet. It can occur in those municipalities located in the foothills of the Sierra del Ordal. It is harvested between May and the end of June. The harvest is done by hand because the peach fruit is very delicate. If it is not harvested at an advancing point of ripeness, it loses quality. It takes 10 to 15 days to mature. He stays home for a week. Its size is medium to small
The phylloxera plague of the late nineteenth century killed all the vineyards of the Ordal, in order to give yield to the land, in 1925 some peach groves began to be planted. The peach was a complement to the vine. Traditionally, the peach went to the Born market and from there a settler distributed it. In 2005, the Patronat de Turisme promoted the recovery of a market in Sant Pau d'Ordal, which has had the right to set up in the town square since the Middle Ages.
It is produced between the municipalities of Subirats and Avinyonet del Penedès and is considered one of the highest quality products in the area. The crop gives the Ordal peach an intense taste and aroma and, depending on the variety, the meat can have a meatier or juicier texture. The best known variety is the vine peach, with an intense yellow colour, fleshy and sweet, but with a small acid touch that makes it very pleasant on the palate. Harvest begins in early June and ends in mid-August. Since it is not watered, the harvest cannot be extended any longer.
Apart from being sold from Mercabarna, it can also be found in Sant Pau d'Ordal on market days. This market lasts on weekends in June until mid-August. It is currently a consolidated market and its existence has allowed producers to have a more direct deal with consumers. They have managed to revitalize a product that was in decline and that allows the producer to make peach farms profitable.
