The DO Tarragona, which occupies an area of millenary tradition in the cultivation of vines, provides soft wines with moderate alcohol content.
The amphora in the logo of the Tarragona Designation of Origin summarises the millennial presence of viticulture in this Designation of Origin. It also links us with the Roman Empire and its cultural legacy, since the amphora was the ceramic container used in antiquity to store and transport wine that was exported throughout Europe, where its geographical origin from Tarragona was already recorded. Since those times, when the Roman poet Pliny the Elder already stood out, until today, the wine produced in the four regions that includes the DO, Tarragonès, Baix Camp, Alt Camp and a good part of the Ribera d'Ebre, has undergone a great change.
Today, some thirty wineries produce their wines within modernist cooperatives designed by architects such as Cèsar Martinell more than a century ago, in family wineries with five generations, or in new wineries promoted in many cases by young oenologists from the Faculty of Oenology of the URV in Tarragona.
The climate of the DO Tarragona and the direct influence of the sea, with a soft orography and exceptional terrain, offer us soft, fresh and typically Mediterranean wines. The whites are mainly made with native varieties, highlighting among them the Macabeo, the firm commitment to distinguish the DO Tarragona; pink; Firm and aromatic reds, mostly from varieties such as Tempranillo or Grenache, and sparkling wines, based on the traditional and ancestral method.
Sweet and liqueur wines, the so-called Tarragona Clàssics, from which the DO Tarragona was founded more than 75 years ago, deserve a separate chapter. Mistela, Muscatel, Grenache, Rancio or Vimblanc, from overripe grapes, make up the treasure of the DO Tarragona from which this important wine region has grown.
