Blond egg from Penedès

Blond eggs were highly prized since the early twentieth century. However, interest has not regained until the last decade, once the breed of Rooster of the Penedès has also been revived.

Coming from the Penedès varieties of chickens (partridge, wheat, golden and black barred), they have a hard shell, rather dark coloration and an intense yellow yolk. The annual average is quite limited because so far efforts in this breed have focused on meat production, and it is expected to increase that of eggs with crosses of breeds or with the specific dedication of organic farms.

Complementary information

The commercialization is still quite limited, and is found in some farms producing Galls del Penedès, as well as during the Rooster Fair in Vilafranca.

Attributes and nutritional properties

The two parts of the egg, the yolk and the white, have very different nutritional properties. The yolk contains mainly saturated fat and a considerable amount of cholesterol, but also essential fat-soluble vitamins, such as A, D and E. On the other hand, the white is basically made up of proteins and also contains all the essential amino acids, which is why the egg is considered the source of protein of the best quality. In the healthy adult population it is recommended to take 3 to 4 eggs a week, as it is a very nutritious and necessary food throughout life and especially in times of growth, pregnancy and also in the elderly, as it can help enrich their diet.
