White goat from Rasquera

It is the only breed of native Catalan goat after the disappearance, in the mid-twentieth century, of the Catalan goat, which was bred in the Catalan Pyrenees.

Rasquera's white goat currently grazes in the inland areas of the Ebro regions, in herds concentrated mainly in Horta de Sant Joan, El Perelló, Prat de Comte, Rasquera, Tivenys, Tivissa and Tortosa. It is usually bred in an extensive regime and, therefore, feeds on forest resources.

It is particularly appreciated for the quality of the meat of its goats and crests: a tender, compact meat with an intense taste. These cubs are fed only with mother's milk. Although they are produced all year round, their production is quite seasonal, linked to the Christmas dates, when their consumption increases.

Complementary information

It is sold fresh in a few butcher's shops in the Ebro region and in some large Catalan markets.

Attributes and nutritional properties

The goat, like all meats, is a good source of protein of high biological value, rich in easily absorbed iron and vitamin B12, indispensable for the formation of red blood cells, for body growth and for tissue regeneration. It is not notable for being a meat with a high fat content. It is worth noting its zinc content (whose deficiency delays growth), higher than the rest of meats, and its high content of vitamin B1, which allows obtaining the maximum energy from carbohydrates.
