Wine DO Tarragona

The DO Tarragona covers the central part of the province, where vines have been grown for a thousand years. The current production area is spread over 73 municipal districts, mainly in the areas of Camp de Tarragona and part of the Ribera d'Ebre. These wines are the product of the mild Mediterranean climate, with average temperatures of 15ºC. They tend to be wines with a moderate alcohol content, a fruity aroma and subtle acidity.

The white wines produced in Camp de Tarragona are particularly mild, balanced, aromatic and fruity. In the Ribera d'Ebre they have a vibrant colour. The grape varieties used are Macabeu, Parellada, Xarel·lo, Chardonnay, Moscatell, Sauvignon Blanc and Garnatxa Blanca. Red wines from Camp de Tarragona are firm and aromatic. Those from the Ribera d'Ebre combine the body and colour of the Carignane with the richness of the Garnatxa. They are made with the varieties Ull de Llebre, Merlot, Samsó, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sumoll, Garnatxa, Syrah and Pinot Noir. In recent years the rosés from Camp de Tarragona, fresh and cherry-coloured, have also achieved greater prestige. Liqueur wines continue to be produced: Mistela de Tarragona, Moscatell de Tarragona, Garnatxa de Tarragona, Vi Ranci de Tarragona and Vi Vimblanc de Tarragona. ‘Crianza' wines must be aged for two years, of which at least six months must be in oak in the case of whites and rosés, and twelve in the case of reds. Liqueur wines must be aged for two years in oak, whereas aged wines must spend four years in periods of wood and glass.
