Wines from this designation of origin are internationally acclaimed. The Mediterranean climate is very varied and provides excellent conditions for vine cultivation, resulting in superb wines and cavas.

There are three sub-areas: Penedès Superior, Penedès Central and Baix Penedès. In the latter, traditional white grape varieties such as Macabeu and Xarel·lo and reds such as Carignane or Monastrell are mainly grown. In Penedès Central the primary product is cava, with Parellada, and also Macabeu, Chardonnay and Riesling being the predominant grapes cultivated. Throughout the DO the whites are generally fresh, fruity and with a moderate alcohol content, while the reds are mild and velvety, complex and with character, produced from Garnatxa Negra, Monastrell, Ull de Llebre, Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon, and improve with age. The rosés, with an alcohol content of 10 to 13%, are fragrant and fruity. The sparkling wines, which are 10-13% proof, have an intense, persistent aroma. The aging process is at least six months for white, rosé and sparkling wines, and 15 months for the reds, which includes an initial phase of oak aging followed by aging in the bottle. In the Alt Penedès, vineyards cover over 25,000ha.
