Because of the low yield of the vines, these wines are highly valued. The most commonly produced are wines for laying down using the varieties Ull de Llebre, Garnatxa Negra and Carignane. Other grape varieties used in the blends include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Monastrell, Garnatxa Peluda, Picapoll Negre and Sirah. White wines are also produced with the varieties Garnatxa Blanca and Macabeu, in particular, and also with Chardonnay, Moscatell, Parellada and Pansal. The DO Montsant covers a surface area of 1,963ha, 912 wine growers, 53 bottling companies, 29 marketing companies, and has an average yield of 70,000hl (data from 2008).
