Tortell de Reis

The day after 'King's night', on January 6th, it is tradition in Catalan homes to eat a ‘tortell' ('O'-shaped cake) in memory of the regal gifts described in the Bible, which has its own special liturgy:  hidden inside it are a figurine of one of the kings, which is the prize, and a bean, the finder of which must renounce their piece of cake.

The cake is made from a brioche base of eggs, sugar, milk, butter and flour, filled with marzipan, custard or cream, and decorated with crystallized fruit on top.
