Penedès Muscovy duck

Bred in the rural areas around Vilafranca since the 16th century. This breed regained popularity in the 1990s and it is now one of the most highly valued ducks as its meat is leaner than that of other species.

The duck is black with white wing patches. With fine skin and firm meat, it is reared on premises with open spaces, normally free range. Its diet must be at least 70% cereal-based although in early life they are only fed fodder and in later life wheat, corn and leftovers. The bird is slaughtered at around twenty weeks.
