Llavaneres pea

The first specific news regarding the pea in Llavaneres dates from the 17th century. Francisco Zamora, in his book ‘Diario de los viajes y hechos en Cataluña' ('Diary of Travels and Facts in Catalonia'), comments on the spring peas grown around Mataró, which are sold in Barcelona from mid-winter onwards. Further references are documented during the 19th and 20th centuries. Durant the 1930s, there is evidence that peas were heavily cultivated and exported to France.

In Llavaneres the Garrofal pea is cultivated, the presence of a variety of which in carob tree fields is thought to have fostered specific adaptation to the area. Its primary distinctive characteristic is that it is very sweet. It is sewn in or around October in land containing silicon and sand. The seed itself is produced by the farmers of the town. Sometime around March the harvest begins, lasting for one or two months.
