Black pea

This variety of pea was introduced to the Berguedà in the 18th century from Vall de Lord. The legume is grown in the mountains on a very small scale as it is highly vulnerable to bugs, particularly when grown on the plains.

When raw the seed is greyish but once cooked it turns a brown-black colour (hence the name). Its texture, once cooked, is smooth and the taste rich and aromatic. Because this pea is generally selected to be consumed dry, the production is later and more grouped together than other varieties for fresh consumption, although this can also be eaten fresh.
