Artesa de Segre melon

The melon grown on the dry land in the Artesa de Segre region is of the variety Pell de Gripau ('toad skin') and thrives on the characteristics of the location: on the one hand, the deep, fertile and dry soil releases exactly the right amount of water for the fruit to grow to the right the size; and on the other, the strong sun and temperature contrasts between day and night, typical of the local microclimate, give this melon its high sugar content and enviable health. It has been more widely cultivated since the 1980s.
